ONCE YOU HAVE REFLECTED ON 2024
USE THE WISDOM GAINED TO CREATE YOUR COMPASS WORD FOR 2025
A few years ago, I first came across the idea of choosing a “nudge” word to guide the year ahead, a practice that’s gained popularity in the U.S. Over time, I’ve made it my own, calling it a “compass” word—an intentional choice to steer me through whatever the coming year brings.
A compass word is a powerful alternative to the traditional New Year’s resolution. Instead of focusing on rigid goals like “exercise every day” or “save more money,” a compass word reflects your values and aspirations for the year ahead. It becomes your guiding principle, a gentle nudge towards positive behaviors and mindset shifts, helping you stay aligned with your bigger vision.
Unlike resolutions, which can feel limiting or daunting, a compass word is flexible and expansive. For example, instead of committing to a fixed routine, you might choose vitality or strength to foster a healthier lifestyle. If your aim is to slow down and be more present, a word like mindful could serve as a daily reminder to savor life’s moments and approach challenges with intention.
The process of selecting a compass word begins with reflection. Take a moment to look back on 2024: What brought you joy? What felt challenging? What kind of energy or growth do you want to cultivate in 2025? Your compass word should resonate deeply, acting as both a source of motivation and a grounding force as the year unfolds.
For 2025, my compass word is BALANCE. Those of you who know me might find this relatable—I often take on too much, jumping from one task to another, with little thought for my own equilibrium. This year, I’m focusing on creating harmony in my work, relationships, and personal time. For me, balance is about learning to prioritise without overwhelm, finding space for creativity and rest, and giving myself permission to pause.
Now, it’s your turn: What will your compass word for 2025 be? Whether it’s growth, calm, courage, or something uniquely your own, I’d love to hear about it. Let’s check in at the end of the year and reflect on how these simple yet meaningful words helped us navigate an ever-changing world.
Here’s to a 2025 filled with purpose and possibility—one word at a time.
